Float Glass

Our experience of over 30 years in the glass industry allows us to remain up to date with the latest glass applications, colours and textures.

Our philosophy has also enabled us to install the latest glass technologies, further enhancing our reputation in the field.

We maintain large stockholdings of glass in a variety of thicknesses, colours and textures... even some rare varieties. This means that just about anything you order should be on hand and ready for delivery almost immediately.

How is glass made?
Before the advent of float glass, semi-molten glass was drawn up through a series of rollers which pressed it to the desired thickness.

Today, glass is produced in a 'Float Line' where the base materials A mix of Silica Sand, Soda, Lime and Potash. Metal Oxides can be added to Tint the glass. are fed into a horizontal furnace where they melt and blend to form a 'plastic' substance.

The resultant liquid is then released to float onto a bed of molten tin. It is this part of the process which imparts the perfectly flat surface to the sheet glass.

When cool, the glass is cut and packaged for shipping.

To ensure consistent results, City Glass has installed a computer-driven cutting machine which automatically cuts float glass with a high degree of accuracy.

Textured & Specialty Glass

We stock a wide variety of tinted and textured glass, in a wide range of sizes. We also stock a range of wired security and safety glass.

We hold extensive stocks of glass to match existing glass styles and colours. This is particularly important when matching existing glass during repair or renovation work.

It also makes City Glass your first choice.

Toughened Glass

Why use toughened glass?
Toughened Glass is the best choice for areas where safety is the highest consideration; for example, sliding glass doors and shower screens.

How is it made?
Toughened Glass is simply ordinary glass that has been specially heat-treated.

The oven evenly heats the glass to around 600 to 700 degrees Celsius, then Quenching A blast of cool air to both faces of the sheet. creates the internal tensions resulting in a toughened glass panel.

The quenching causes the glass to shrink at both faces, making the central layers of glass remain in tension. This gives the glass up to 5 times its original strength.

In the event of breakage, the sheet shatters into small, relatively harmless granules of glass instead of dangerous long, sharp shards.

The process also imparts a much higher heat resistance property to the glass.

The image above shows our Toughening Oven, which handles most float and patterned glass sheets in thicknesses ranging from 4mm to 19mm and sheet sizes up to 3800mm long and up to 2140mm wide.

Laminated Glass

What is Laminated Glass?
Laminated Glass is simply two layers of glass which sandwich a cushioning vinyl interlayer, known as PVB.Poly Vinyl Butryl

This bonded interlayer helps to retain the structural integrity of the glass in the event of damaging impact.

Also available from City Glass is a range of high performance laminated glass products, with stringently controlled specifications including application into land & marine vehicles.

Some of the benefits of high performance laminated glass include the dramatic reduction of transmitted light, heat and sound energy.

Architectural Applications
Modern architecture utilises glass in a variety of structural and design applications. As such, public safety is a prime consideration.

Laminated Glass affords energy-saving and sound reducing benefits in buildings of all sizes.

While a large glazed area admits plenty of light, it can also permit the transfer of radiant heat energy.

Laminated Glass, correctly specified, can reduce the strain on air-conditioning systems, thereby reducing energy costs, while still maximising available light.
